The Danish Foreign Minister visits Thailand – Burma high on the agenda
First on the agenda, was a meeting with representatives from a number of Burmese exile groups, NGO’s, media and other connoisseurs of the country. The purpose was to discuss the political situation in Burma as well as how the exile groups and NGO’s experience the current positive development.
The Foreign Minister also met with representatives from Karen National Union (KNU) and Kachin Independence Organization (KIO), two of the leading groups among the ethnic nationalities in Burma. During the meeting participants had the opportunity to discuss Burma’s longstanding armed conflicts between the Burmese government and several of the country’s ethnic nationalities. Despite recent ceasefire agreements, conflicts still persist in some parts of the country and pose a significant obstacle to Burma’s political transition. The Foreign Minister expressed a firm Danish commitment to the efforts towards national reconciliation in Burma, and he encouraged the ethnic nationalities to engage in constructive cooperation in this regard.
